Immigration From U.S

The Loyalists were a group of Americans who remained loyal to Great Britain during the American Revolution. After the war was over, the Loyalists moved out of United States of America because it was dangerous for them. 15% of them fled to Europe. The northern Loyalists moved to Lower or Upper Canada. A push factor was the possibility of facing danger and a pull factor was the fact that Canada was under British rule. A law was passed on July, 1793 by Governor Simcoe in Upper Canada. After the establishment of slavery, the Black Americans decided to immigrate to Canada. An Underground Railroad was established in early 19th century and it helped Black Americans to escape slavery. This is a collection of safe houses and furtive passages. These refugees travelled hundreds of kilometres on foot. Some Americans decided to help them escape and a majority of them were from a Quaker or Methodist church. The church members believed that slavery was a sin. If the Black Americans were caught escaping, they would be severely punished.

After Black Americans arrived in Upper Canada, discrimination was not completely abolished. It took another 100 years for all them to be accepted. For more information on underground railroad, please visit http://www.thecanadianencyclopedia.ca/en/article/underground-railroad/.
