New Democrat Party (NDP)

New Democrat Party is founded during the Great Depression of Canada; however, it is not well known until 1961. This party is classified as too “fringe” or “radical”; therefore, it does not receive enough support. NDP is stuck in the margins until 1990. In that year, many have predicted that this party will abolish due to the lack of seats. In 2011 federal election, the number of seats have skyrocketed from 37 to 102 in one night. Most of this credit is given to Jack Layton (1950-2011).

New Democratic Party is on the left side of the spectrum because they believe in high taxes for the wealthy and large corporations. This party strongly supports skilled workers and unions like teachers, nurses and government employees. This action shows that NDP is leaning on the left.

Bloc Québécois (BQ)

The Bloc Québécois is a party in Canada; nevertheless, only citizens in Quebec can vote for them. Since Quebec speaks french and the rest of Canada does not, they want to separate. They are classified as the “separatists”. This party is founded by Lucien Bouchard (1938-) in 1990.

The Québécois is considered as a left wing party not only because Quebec is classified as the leftest province in North America, they also support equality and equal rights. Their actions are very similar to the NDP.

Progressive Conservatives

The first leader of this party is John A. Macdonalds. The Progressive is created by a group of farmers because in 1920, the farm industry is ignored. They do not have a plan for managing the government. In 2003 the members of the party have voted to dissolve the Progressive Conservatives party and join the New Conservatives Party.
